Advanced, non-surgical treatments
Have you heard terms like “stem cell injections,” “PRP,” or “prolotherapy”? If you have, then you already have an introduction to orthobiologic treatment! Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance and its orthobiologics providers are leaders in utilizing regenerative treatments to assist in healing acute injuries and helping patients avoid surgery.
KCOA is a trusted provider of orthobiologics in Kansas City—our providers being well regarded in the region as experts on these advanced treatments. Because we are the most sub-specialized practice in the area, our orthobiologics team dedicates itself explicitly to growing and excelling in this field.
Orthobiologics procedures differentiate themselves by allowing patients to use their own healing potential, utilizing the body’s cells and growth factors to treat acute injuries and chronic pain. Our providers obtain these growth factors by sourcing platelet-rich plasma from a small amount of blood, or by acquiring stem cells from the patient’s own body.
All orthobiologic injections are performed under either ultrasound guidance or live x-ray (fluoroscopic) guidance for unequivocal accuracy.
Our specialized, board-certified physicians take time to accurately pinpoint the source of your ailment and design a treatment plan — based on your individual needs.

Treatment Options
Platelet-rich plasma, or “PRP,” is a highly researched method to heal injuries faster and without surgery. Via a simple blood draw, we can concentrate an individual’s platelets and growth factors with a centrifuge and isolate these important components to inject into an injured area. After a period of time, growth factors can help stimulate cellular growth and promote healing in and around the site of injection.
Conditions Treated
Bone marrow and adipose (fat) contain rich levels of regenerative stem cells. These cells are withdrawn from an individual’s body, then placed in a centrifuge to separate the regenerative cells and platelets. This creates a concentrate that can be up to 25 times richer in these cells and growth factors. Under ultrasound guidance, we inject these patient-derived stem cells into the injured area to promote the body’s natural healing capabilities.
Conditions Treated
The idea behind “proliferation therapy” is to irritate a tendon or joint into thinking it is more injured than it actually is, resulting in a profound inflammatory and subsequent healing response. KCOA orthobiologics providers use dextrose water as the irritant solution, with percentages varying based on the type and extent of the injury. During your appointment, an experienced orthobiologics doctor at KCOA will determine a highly individualized prolotherapy application for your medical needs.
Conditions Treated
Through years of research and practice, KCOA providers have seen particularly effective results through the use of combination treatments. In fact, we frequently combine PRP and stem cell injections using our bone marrow concentrate (BMC) injections, in addition to other complementary injections.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most common injections we use to support our orthobiologics patients. HA is a chemical that exists in a person’s healthy joints and tendons. Naturally, HA exerts anti-inflammatory effects, helps to cushion a joint, and keep tendons healthy. When injected, this anti-inflammatory solution encourages ligament and tendon healing and acts as a lubricant to protect in and around the treatment area.
Autologous thrombin is another supporting injection within the umbrella of orthobiologics. Thrombin is a naturally occurring protein essential for wound healing; our providers use your own thrombin, when appropriate, to help supplement your orthobiologic injections and produce the best possible outcomes. Using advanced technology that concentrates your thrombin within your blood, we essentially form a clot so that the stem cells from your injection can stay within the targeted area.

Why Choose Orthobiologics at KCOA?
Clinic Expertise
The truth is, not all orthobiologics programs are created equal. Education, training, experience, and integrity differ in every practice and greatly impact the quality of a patient’s outcome.
Dr. Khadavi and Dr. Moore have been at the forefront of orthobiologics over the last 10 years. They are regular teachers and directors for various stem cell and ultrasound courses around the country.
Not every patient is a candidate for stem cell, PRP, or proliferation treatment. You can trust that Dr. Khadavi or Dr. Moore will provide you with an accurate and honest prediction of success with these treatments.
Comprehensive Orthopedic Evaluations
An orthobiologics program as one division of a comprehensive orthopedic practice reduces the risk of bias toward unnecessary or ineffective regenerative procedures.
KCOA is a complete orthopedic center, committed to determining the most effective consideration of all treatment options. These options can range from conservative therapies to surgical intervention. This targeted, customized plan leads to optimal outcomes while avoiding unnecessary time commitments or costs.
Precision Techniques
At KCOA, musculoskeletal ultrasound is the foundation of all orthobiologics treatments. Using this technique, our providers can make a proper diagnosis and meticulously pinpoint the area of injection, allowing for the highest levels of both precision and safety. Dr. Khadavi and Dr. Moore each have years of experience as clinicians and educators in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
In fact, Dr. Khadavi is the only orthobiologics physician in Kansas City who holds the distinction of being a national educator in both orthobiologics and ultrasound, while at the same time holding RMSK Certification.
