Joints are a fundamental component of health and vitality.

However, years of wear and tear can diminish the surrounding cartilage that protects your bones. As more time passes, further degeneration can lead to osteoarthritis, among other complications. In addition, certain injuries could have a long-lasting impact on your joints and cartilage, which may continue worsening.

Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance offers pain management treatment plans for joint degeneration. Since we focus on patient-centered care, we tailor our treatments to each individual, ensuring we can provide the best outcomes. From arthroscopy and joint resurfacing to joint replacement, we specialize in a wide variety of comprehensive techniques and treatment options to restore function and relieve pain.

Our joint replacement surgeons strive to provide excellent care.

Our board-certified, fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeons are highly experienced in their field and are considered among the top providers in the Midwest. Along with our Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and support staff, Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance physicians deliver the utmost level of dedicated care across a range of subspecialties.

We’ve worked hard to build Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance with all the benefits of a large orthopedic collective, while maintaining the community impact and familiarity of an intimate, private-practice model.

Preparing for Surgery

01/01

Get Started

While joint replacement may not be the initial recommendation for patients with joint concerns, it can result in life-changing improvement for many.

01/06

An Initial Appointment

The joint replacement process begins with an initial appointment, the length of which varies based on your condition. More complex joint-degeneration issues will require more time with your physician, especially if you have multiple musculoskeletal conditions.

Most people undergo a joint preservation treatment or joint replacement in Kansas City as a result of osteoarthritis complications. Osteoarthritis comes from the wear and tear of the cartilage that surrounds joints.

02/06

Diagnosing Your Concerns

Cartilage plays an important role in how your joints move and feel by creating a layer of protection against direct joint connection. Therefore, a lack of cartilage can lead to inflammation and joint degeneration.

Diagnosing osteoarthritis requires an examination from an orthopedic physician, which may include tests such as X-rays and/or ultrasound. From there, we can build a treatment plan that works best with your goals and lifestyle.

03/06

Questions We Ask

The KCOA orthopedic specialists always focus on each individual patient and their concerns before creating a treatment plan. Therefore, during your initial appointment, we will often ask questions such as:

  • Does your pain currently limit you or your activities?
  • Has your pain progressed or worsened recently?
  • Have you noticed any change in your symptoms that has made it more challenging to function?
  • What are your lifestyle goals?
  • How has pain affected those goals?

From there, we can decide whether more conservative osteoarthritis treatments will suffice or whether you would find the most benefit with surgery.

04/06

Creating Your Treatment Plan

Our providers will create a customized treatment plan based on the information gathered at your initial appointment, physical exam, and diagnostic testing. At KCOA, we understand that no two patients are alike—that’s why we work with you to develop a treatment that aligns with your injury, lifestyle, and goals for recovery.

Your treatment plan might include one or more of the following:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Medications
  • Supplements
  • Injections
  • Braces
  • Surgery
  • Other specialized treatments

05/06

Begin Treatment

After working with your KCOA provider to identify the right treatment for your needs, it’s time to start your journey to recovery. We will provide the necessary resources, education, and support to help you achieve your goals.

Our providers prefer to start with conservative, non-surgical approaches to alleviate joint pain. However, if you’ve exhausted all non-invasive options and still can’t find relief, it might be time to consider a joint replacement in Kansas City. We understand that surgery is a big decision, but our experienced providers are here to support you every step of the way.

06/06

Surgery

If you and your provider determine a joint replacement is necessary, we will thoroughly discuss what you can expect before, during, and after surgery. From insurance approval to post-operative care, the KCOA team will help ensure a smooth process from start to finish.

If you have questions about your treatment options, what to expect after surgery, or other concerns about joint replacement in Kansas City, our team is available to assist you.

Our Process

Treatment Options

Our KCOA physicians only make recommendations for partial or total joint replacement when we have exhausted all other conservative measures or it is apparent that surgery is the only available solution. This is always a collaborative decision. It’s important you feel empowered to make the best choice for you, with your goals and timelines in mind. Common areas of the body that might require joint replacement include: shoulders, fingers, wrists, ankles, knees, and hips.
