What We Treat

01/06

Getting Started

If you have an injury, getting the right care quickly usually leads to the best outcome. All work comp patients must file an injury report with their employer.

In most instances, the employer or a representative of the workers’ compensation insurance company will call to schedule your appointment.

02/06

Necessary Information

When calling one of our Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance offices, please provide the following information:

  • Employer name and phone number
  • Date of Injury
  • Injured body part
  • Workers’ compensation carrier and address
  • Claim number

We will verify the claim and get authorization before performing any treatment.

03/06

Examination

During your initial appointment, you will undergo a detailed evaluation of your complaint and corresponding physical examination.

Sometimes, we may need further testing to determine the correct diagnosis.

This may include X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, electrodiagnostic testing, or other advanced medical tests.

04/06

Your Treatment

During your first appointment and follow-up appointments, our physicians typically recommend conservative measures before turning to surgery.

We strive to achieve your desired outcome through the least invasive route possible.

Therefore, we will only suggest surgery when it is the best option for alleviating your symptoms.

This is part of our dedication to bringing value to our patients as the largest orthopedic practice in Kansas City.

05/06

Treatment & Recovery

Throughout the treatment and recovery process, we focus on creating outcomes that maximize your function so you can return to work safely and efficiently.

Our physicians will align our management recommendations with your goals.

Therefore, two people with the same diagnosis may undergo two different management plans.

06/06

Work Status Updates

At the end of each office visit, you’ll receive a work status form with information detailing any restrictions to the performance of your essential job demands.

These should be provided to your employer. You’ll also receive any prescriptions that your physician would like to be filled (physical therapy, medical equipment, medications- if necessary).

These forms, along with the office note from your physician, will be faxed to your employer, your adjuster or your nurse case manager within 24-48 hours of each visit.

How It Works

Treatment Options

Physical Therapy

Sometimes, the best treatment option for a workplace injury is a referral to a physical or occupational therapist to help regain range of motion, decrease pain, and increase strength in the affected area. Typically, the human body adapts and heals through movement, especially when guided by a trained musculoskeletal expert.

Prescription Medications

Your physician may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications to reduce pain, muscle spasm, inflammation, and more. This will depend on your specific needs, symptoms, and other factors surrounding your condition.

Pain Injections

Injections directly into the affected area can help reduce pain. Based on your condition, response to treatment, and your physician’s recommendations, additional injections may be necessary. Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance offers ultrasound-guided injections to visualize the area of concern in real time and optimize your treatment’s effectiveness.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine options, such as stem cell injections or platelet-rich plasma, can help repair worn or damaged tissue. This option works best if you are a younger patient with mild-to-moderate injuries.

Nerve Pathology and Management

Nerve injuries require unique approaches to assess the presence and extent of injury fully. Two common, and often complementary, ways we evaluate nerves are through electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies and electromyograms) and ultrasound.

Orthopedic Surgery

Our Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance physicians only make recommendations for surgical interventions when we have exhausted all other conservative measures, or it is apparent that the only available solution is surgery. This is always a collaborative decision. It’s important you feel empowered to make the best choice for you, with your goals and timelines in mind.
