LEAWOOD, Kan. – Dr. Theodore Koreckij, orthopedic spine surgeon, now performs the Intracept® Procedure at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (KCOI). As Kansas City’s only hospital dedicated exclusively to orthopedics, KCOI is the first specialty hospital in the Kansas City area to provide this procedure. It is also home to Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics’ Leawood, Kan., location.
Intracept is a minimally invasive option to treat certain types of chronic low back pain. Dr. Koreckij first brought the FDA-cleared procedure to the practice in 2017 as part of a clinical study. In early 2019, the procedure became available commercially, and Dr. Koreckij has performed it numerous times at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, where the KCMO offices of Dickson-Diveley are located.
Now, he is providing the pain-relieving procedure at KCOI as well, making it more easily accessible for patients on both sides of the state line. In July, Dr. C. Lan Fotopoulos, an interventional physiatrist who specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures at Dickson-Diveley, also began performing the Intracept procedure, further increasing accessibility for patients.
How Intracept Works
Intracept can rapidly relieve low back pain by blocking the transmission of pain signals from the basiverterbral nerve. As an outpatient procedure, it requires no overnight hospital stay or restrictions on activities. Watch the video below to learn more:
An MRI and physical examination are performed to determine whether patients qualify for the Intracept Procedure. It may be an option for those who meet the following criteria:
- Do not have spinal instability or scoliosis
- Do have degenerative changes to the vertebral endplate (also known as “modic changes”)
- Have experienced chronic low back pain for more than six months that has not responded to nonsurgical treatments
