We continue our physician blog series with Danny Gurba, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who joined our practice in 1985. Dr. Gurba specializes in joint replacement for knee and hip conditions.

Dr. Gurba, please tell our readers a little about your professional and academic background.

I earned my medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where I also completed an internship in internal medicine before my residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City/Truman Medical Center. I also completed a fellowship in joint reconstruction at Rothman Institute in Pennsylvania.

Today, I am certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the Kansas Orthopaedic Society. In addition to my duties as an attending physician at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute and Saint Luke’s Hospital, I serve as a Courtesy Staff Physician at Truman Medical Center and St. Joseph Health Center. I am also a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

As an orthopedic surgeon, what are your subspecialized areas of expertise?

I specialize in joint replacement surgery for degenerative hip and knee conditions, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The most common procedures I perform include knee replacement and hip replacement. In fact, since beginning my practice in 1985, I have performed nearly 10,000 total hip replacements and total knee replacements.

Do you treat workers’ compensation patients?

While a majority of my practice is dedicated to treating degenerative conditions of the hip and knee, I also treat workers’ compensation injuries. My primary goal is offering the quality care and expertise patients need to return to active living without bone, muscle or joint pain.

Do you coordinate care with other healthcare providers?

Yes. Aside from the great group of physician assistants and nurse practitioners at Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics, I also work with interventional physiatrists and physical therapists to rule out all forms of conservative care before surgery. When appropriate, I also coordinate care with case managers, adjusters and other orthopedic surgeons and physicians.
