Derek works alongside Dr. Koreckij as a Physician Assistant – Spine Surgery. He has been practicing as a PA for 24 years. Most of this has been with a focus on spine surgery, but he has additional experience in neurosurgery and general orthopedics. Derek completed his BS degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Wichita State University.

More About Derek Barnard
Since 2005, Derek has been employed as a PA in Overland Park with an orthopedic spine surgery practice working alongside fellowship trained spine surgeons in the clinic, hospital, and surgery settings. He’s looking forward to being at KCOA; particularly about “working in collaboration, while also learning and growing, with the best Kansas City has to offer in orthopedic care from administration to doctors, advanced practice provider colleagues, nurses, physical therapists, supporting medical staff, and all the other professionals and specialists who are integral in the everyday processes of a successful practice.”
Outside of Work
Derek married his high school sweetheart who he’s known since attending elementary school together on the edge of the Flint Hills in Madison, KS. He and his wife have three children and three dogs. Derek notes that they are a KSU family through and through and enjoy being around those that mutually love the purple. His Dad played on the last KSU Final Four team way back in 1964 which is the foundation of their love of the school. Derek counts himself as a lifelong fan of the Chiefs and Royals as well!
