From now until December 18, 2019, staff at Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics is banding together to support two families in need.
Both families currently live at Phoenix Family – an amazing organization with a mission to provide a stable, safe and decent home for low-income families striving to chart a more secure and hopeful future. They are in need of many household items and extras to stay warm and happy this holiday season. Take a moment to read about the two families below, and if you are moved to provide your own contribution, please see the instructions at the bottom of this article to offer your support.
Olivia & Family
Olivia is a young mother with four kids. She has never had much money but has always done everything she can for her children, even when she was living in Section 8 housing. They’ve always had a roof over their heads, and she does everything she can to keep four growing kids full. She eventually found a job that she loves working with military veterans. It was important to her to find a job with meaning.
She says her first job is being a mother, but her work with veterans not only impacts the lives of others, it also keeps the lights on. It was hard for her to get the work she has now, but she is grateful to have a safe place for her family. She pulled herself and her family up a long way to get here, and they will continue to move up because they work hard. Olivia wants to show her children they have to work hard in life but they can still do what they love.
India & Family
India recently left a domestic violence situation. Over the past six months, she has focused her energy on creating a peaceful environment for her children. India has always held employment but recently was unexpectedly laid off from her job. She has been working extensively with the Phoenix Family team to gain employment, but she knows that when she does, her focus will have to be catching up on bills and necessities, instead of Christmas presents and holiday means.
India knows she needs assistance this holiday season and stated that her only motivation for pushing forward is her daughters. India is proud of maintaining a very clean, healthy home, and she said the biggest struggle right now is the difficulty of finding a job. Because the children’s father is not allowed in the home, India has had to take on the full responsibility of all four of her children to keep the whole family safe. India actively seeks out opportunities for her kids to stay busy and active. Despite having had a tough year, her children are joyous and respectful to others. They deserve a holiday to remember.

While Dickson-Diveley is encouraging its staff to donate items from the families’ needs lists, the entire Kansas City community is welcome to join the effort.
