Stem Cell Procedure Types

Types of Stem Cell Procedures | Kansas City Orthopedic Experts

stem cell procedure types:

Over the last 15 years, seemingly countless regenerative and stem cell procedures have come on the market. In 2019 we have a good deal of research and data on the basic science behind the various stem cell procedure types. Fortunately, we know which procedures work best. These procedures include:

  • PRP (platelet rich plasma)
  • BMC (Bone Marrow Concentrate)
  • PPP (platelet poor plasma)
  • Adipose (stromal vascular fraction, lipogem, etc.)
  • Wharton’s jelly
  • Regenokine
  • Chorionic tissue
  • Prolotherapy
  • Placental derived tissue
  • Amniotic tissue
  • Orthokin
  • A2M (alpha-2 macroglobulin)
  • Other concentrated protein and growth factor procedures (IRAP, etc)

…and the list is still growing.

PRP & BMC: painless and promising

While it is exciting to have so many stem cell procedure types and new developments, two of these treatments standout in their clinical efficacy: PRP and BMC. They just work better. Over the last two decades of research and development, PRP and BMC have proven to be the most effective in growing tendon, cartilage, ligament, and bone. In addition, they carry a strong anti-inflammatory effect, which acts as a pain reliever.

Moreover, the safety of these procedures is stunningly positive. In fact, their proven safety is why these two procedures are frequently recommended for tendon tears, tendonitis, cartilage fissures, and osteoarthritis, among other issues. Furthermore, the medical community has studied PRP and BMC most extensively in tendonitis and arthritis—especially knee arthritis and hip arthritis—with promising outcomes. However, even with the research, each joint, tendon, and ligament is unique. Therefore, our regenerative physician at Apex will guide you through the entire process, including rehabilitation and return to sports and activities.

You Heal You Best. We just help.

So far, procedures that use someone else’s tissue, such as amnion, chorion or Wharton’s jelly have been studied hundreds of times—and independently—showing much less efficacy. These tissues are full of stem cells at the time of harvest. However, we have learned that by the time they are processed, frozen, stored, and thawed, these precious cells are either dead or close to it. They have no function left in them. Furthermore, these tissues still contain growth factors, but these growth factor levels are less than a third of the levels used in PRP or BMC.
