What We Treat

01/03

Our Process

The process begins with an initial appointment, the length of which varies based on your condition. More complex issues will require more time with your physician, especially if you have multiple musculoskeletal conditions.

At this appointment, we will gather information about your medical history, ask questions about your injury, and discuss your current symptoms. Then, we will conduct a physical examination to assess the affected area. We will test for:

  • Strength
  • Range of motion
  • Mobility
  • Stability
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling

Using this information, your provider will determine if further diagnostic testing is necessary.

02/03

Our Process

Our patient-centric approach means we conduct individualized tests and studies based on your physical examination. Tests may include:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Digital X-Ray
  • Electromyograms (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies
  • Ultrasound
  • And Other Medical Technologies

Once we have the results of your examinations, we outline treatment options for your individual needs.

03/03

Our Process

Most sports-related injuries do not require surgical intervention and typically heal within a few weeks to a few months. To ensure your injuries heal, it’s vital to follow your treatment plan and take the recovery process seriously.

If return to play is your goal, our team of experts will work with you, your coaches and any other medical experts involved to ensure a safe and effective return to your sport.

At Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance, our board-certified sports medicine physicians work with you to find treatment solutions that help manage your pain, increase stability, and prevent further injuries.

How It Works

Fellowship-trained physicians with the expertise to treat your injury.

KCOA is proud to have many fellowship-trained physicians on our team. These skilled providers have undergone an additional 1 to 2 years of specialized education and experience focused on sports-related injuries and conditions.

When you choose KCOA for your sports-related injury, you receive treatment from some of the most trained and experienced providers in the region. Whether you need rehabilitation, medication, injections, surgical intervention, or another specialized treatment, sports medicine in Kansas City can treat your injury and get you back in the game.

Treatment Options

Physical Therapy

In many instances, the best treatment option is a referral to a physical or occupational therapist to assist in regaining range of motion, decreasing pain, and increasing strength in the affected area. Typically, the human body adapts and heals through movement, especially when guided by a trained musculoskeletal expert.

Prescription Medications

Your physician may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications to reduce pain, muscle spasm, inflammation, and more. This will depend on your specific needs, symptoms, and other factors surrounding your condition.

Pain Injections

Injections directly into the affected site can often help with acute pain. Based on your condition, response to treatment, and your physician’s recommendations, additional injections may be necessary. Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance offers ultrasound-guided injections to visualize the area of concern in real time and optimize your treatment’s effectiveness.

Stem Cell and PRP Treatments

Options such as stem cell injections or platelet-rich plasma can help repair worn or damaged tissue. This option may be a better fit if you are a younger patient with mild-to-moderate injuries.

Orthopedic Surgery

Our Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance physicians only make recommendations for surgical interventions when we have exhausted all other conservative measures, or it is apparent that the only available solution is surgery. This is always a collaborative decision. It’s important you feel empowered to make the best decision for you, with your goals and timelines in mind.
