Scott Wingerter, M.D., Ph.D., board-certified orthopedic surgeon, has been appointed as the Medical Honoree for the 2017 Walk to Cure Arthritis in Kansas City.

The community-wide event, which takes place during Arthritis Awareness Month each May, helps raise awareness about the effects of arthritis and increase funds for arthritis research. This year’s Walk is scheduled for May 6 at Worlds of Fun and features a three-mile and one-mile course. Kansas City is one of many U.S. cities that participate in the nationwide fundraising event.

“I am honored to serve as the Medical Honoree for the Walk to Cure Arthritis,” said Dr. Wingerter, who specializes in treating degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the hip and knee. “By walking together and raising funds for arthritis research, we can provide resources and information to change the lives of more people coping with the disease, while also accelerating the path to a cure.”

As Medical Honoree, Dr. Wingerter helps raise funds for arthritis research and inspire others to get involved.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Wingerter as our Medical Honoree for the 2017 Walk to Cure Arthritis,” said Steve Rock, Executive Director at the Arthritis Foundation. “He joined us at last year’s Walk to Cure Arthritis, and we were impressed by his outstanding leadership and passion for making a difference in the lives of those affected by arthritis. We knew then he was the obvious choice for this role.”

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting nearly 55 million adults (22.7 percent of the population). The Arthritis Foundation is focused on finding a cure and championing the fight against arthritis with life-changing information, advocacy, science and community. Resources for learning about arthritis, practical tips for daily living and more are available on the non-profit organization’s website, arthritis.org.
