(Dec. 18, 2018) – Great news for patients with knee arthritis or knee injuries: Surgeons at Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics now provide robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery at Saint Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza in Kansas City.

Dr. Scott Wingerter and Dr. Nicholas Ting, two orthopedic surgeons specializing in knee replacements and hip replacements at Dickson-Diveley, now perform robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement surgery using the Mako® Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology. They will soon begin performing total hip replacements with this technology as well. With the Mako system, orthopedic surgeons can perform a procedure that carefully removes damaged bone and cartilage before the joint implant is inserted. After customizing a surgical plan for the patient, the surgeon precisely guides the robotic arm, aligns the components of the implant, and observes the body’s tiniest details through 3-D images while sitting at a console in the operating room.

Potential benefits of robotic-assisted joint replacement can include reduced blood loss and scarring, a lower risk of infection, faster recovery, less discomfort, and fewer complications for the patient. Videos are available on the Mako manufacturer’s website that provide more details about how the procedure works for partial knee replacement and total knee replacement.

“We’re so pleased to be working with this state-of-the-art technology that offers many enhanced benefits for our patients,” Dr. Wingerter said. “It helps us continue to provide the highest possible standard of care, and it can get patients back on their feet faster to return to the activities they love.”

According to Stryker, the parent company of Mako, the first Mako procedure was a partial knee replacement in 2006. Since then, more than 83,000 Mako hip and knee replacement procedures have been performed around the world.
