Leawood, Kan. (August 29, 2018) – Dr. Mark Winston, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand, wrist and upper extremity injuries at Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics, has successfully completed the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Stage II oral certifying examination.
Dr. Winston is now a Diplomate of the Board, more commonly known as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon.
The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, based in Chapel Hill, N.C., establishes educational standards for orthopedic residents and evaluates the initial and continuing qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Winston, as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, has demonstrated his commitment to the highest quality care and continuing medical education.
Board certification is a voluntary process on the part of any physician. It is different and distinct from licensure to practice medicine, a function regulated by state government. A valid medical license is required to be board certified, but certification is not necessary for licensure. A board-certified physician has met certain standards and passed tests that are developed to assure the public that he or she has been adequately trained in a given specialty.
Dr. Winston joined Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics in 2016 after completing his hand and upper extremity fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, the #1 ranked orthopedic hospital in the country. During his time in New York, he was involved in the upper extremity care of the New York Giants, New York Mets, New York Rangers and New York Knicks professional sports teams, and he trained with some of the top leaders in the field of hand and elbow surgery.
Dr. Winston completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in 2015 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wis. He was selected as the Administrative Chief Resident and was recognized by the American Orthopaedic Association as an Emerging Leader in Orthopaedics.
He earned his medical degree in 2010 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) after completing the university’s rigorous, six-year combined Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine program. He graduated with the highest distinction from both programs and was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. During his time at UMKC, he also played on the varsity tennis team.
Dr. Winston grew up in Green Bay, Wis., and has been an avid tennis player his entire life. During high school, he was a four-time individual state tournament qualifier and ranked #2 overall in the state. While in residency, he served as an assistant tennis coach for a local high school team. Dr. Winston also enjoys outdoor sports and activities, traveling and spending time with his family.
With his patient’s care and well-being as his top priority, Dr. Winston is dedicated to partnering with his patients to develop an individualized treatment plan best suited to their needs. Learn more about Dr. Winston’s background and philosophy of care in the following video:
