Apex on the Sidelines of Grandview High School Football Games
Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (formerly Carondelet Orthopedic Surgeons) has partnered with Grandview High School to provide sports medicine coverage at all home football games this season. Sports Medicine coverage of the football team and all Grandview athletics is led by Dr. Michael McCabe, a Fellowship trained Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon. Dr. McCabe and Dr. Abraham can be found on the sidelines of home games for the rest of this season.
Shoulder Injuries are common in football players.
One often seen by our sports medicine specialists is a shoulder dislocation. A dislocation occurs when the ball (humerus bone) pops out of the socket (glenoid bone). Although this can happen at any position, defensive backs and linebackers are most likely to sustain a dislocation when tackling. Sometimes the shoulder will relocate on its own, but many times it remains dislocated. That is to say, it requires a doctor on the sideline or athletic trainer to perform the relocation.
The athlete who sustains a shoulder dislocation should have it promptly evaluated by an orthopedic sports medicine specialist. X-Rays by the orthopedic surgeon are important because fractures of the ball and/or socket are common with these injuries and influence treatment options. In many cases, emergency room or urgent care x-rays will not show these fractures adequately. Most dislocations in young contact athletes require shoulder surgery to stabilize the shoulder and minimize long term damage from repeat dislocation episodes. However, this can often this can be postponed until after the season.
We can’t prevent all football injuries, but providing care quickly and appropriately is something we can do.

Our goal is to quickly evaluate, treat and return athletes to the activities they love without the expensive ER visits and without the delay of waiting to see a specialist.
After falling to Chrisman last week, the Grandview Bulldogs hope to earn a win Friday night. This game is against Shawnee Mission Northwest as they celebrate Homecoming.
Dr. McCabe has taken the leadership role in Grandview High School athletics as the team sports medicine specialist. Becky Dowden, PA-C is his primary assistant. Dr. McCabe has been with Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine since September 2016 after serving on the Shoulder Surgery & Sports Medicine service team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD from 2012-2016. He is particularly interested in all types of shoulder instability and has subspecialty training in hip arthroscopy, elbow and knee injuries. He regularly treats Fall sports injuries of any kind including ACL tears, ankle sprains and elbow dislocations. Lastly, he believes in an individualized treatment plan based on each patient’s injury, symptoms, activities and personal goals.
