We continue our physician blog series with Robert Gardiner, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who joined our practice in 1992. Dr. Gardiner specializes in joint replacement for knee and hip conditions.
Dr. Gardiner, please tell our readers a little about your professional and academic background.
After finishing my B.S. in Pharmacy, I received my M.D. from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. I completed my internship at Saint Luke’s Hospital before moving on to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) for my residency in orthopaedic surgery. I also completed a fellowship in hip and knee surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and served as Team Physician for the Kansas City Blades hockey team from 1992-2001.
I am certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Kansas Orthopaedic Society. I am proud to be an attending physician at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute and Saint Luke’s Hospital – as well as a Courtesy Staff Physician at Truman Medical Center – and I also serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UMKC School of Medicine.
As an orthopedic surgeon, what are your subspecialized areas of expertise?
I specialize in joint replacement surgery for degenerative hip and knee conditions, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The most common procedures I perform include knee replacement and hip replacement.
Do you treat workers’ compensation patients?
Yes. Whether the goal is returning to work, getting back in the game, or just enjoying life without bone, muscle or joint pain, I am dedicated to providing a personalized treatment plan for every patient.
Do you coordinate care with other healthcare providers?
As an orthopedic surgeon, I work closely with interventional physiatrists and physical therapists to ensure surgery is really the patient’s best option. I also coordinate care with physician assistants, nurse practitioners, case managers, adjusters and other physicians as needed.
If you are a patient, referring physician, case manager or caregiver in need of more information about Dr. Gardiner or the procedures he performs, please call 913-319-7600.
