What is Orthopedics?
Have you ever really wondered what exactly is orthopedics or orthopedic surgery?
“What all do you do?” is a frequent question we hear at Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. Indeed, our team of orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists treat a plethora of medical issues. From your head to your toes; the expert physicians at Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offer the best medical care in the Kansas City area.
Orthopedics is the medical study of conditions and injuries pertaining to the musculoskeletal system. That is, anything involving bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.
An orthopedic surgeon, orthopedist, or orthopod is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system. A physiatrist is similar but with an emphasis on conservative management with physical medicine, rehabilitation and neurological studies.
Caring for orthopedic issues includes both surgical and non-surgical treatment options
Although six of our eight physicians are surgeons, conservative care is often our FIRST option. Conservative care in orthopedics can consist of physical therapy, injections, mobility training, anti-inflammatories, or bracing along with other options which you can discuss with your physician.
The physicians at Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offer various injections such as: synvisc, cortisone, and PRP and Stem Cell. We perform these injections under ultrasound guidance which provides for a more accurate placement of the injection. Furthermore, an accurate placement will more effectively treat the issue.
Our two physiatrists include Dr. Khadavi and Dr. Chandra. Dr. Khadavi is sports medicine certified and offers minimally invasive procedures including: radiofrequency ablations, epidurals and medial branch blocks. Dr. Chandra offers non-surgical treatment for chronic pain, migraines and osteoarthritis as well as many other conditions. In other words, the providers at Apex Orthopedics work to get you back to your active lifestyle with or without surgery.
Should conservative treatment not be an option for your orthopedic condition, each of our physicians are expertly trained. Further, many are specialized in specific areas of the body, ensuring you are being cared for by the most highly trained surgeons. Our physicians have additional training in:
- Sport medicine
- Knee, shoulder, total joint replacements
- hand & wrist, foot & ankle, and hip conditions
